New regulations for credentialing

2012-08-03 12:59

At the AGM in 2012, a series of changes were made to enhance the credentialing process.
These changes are highlighted in the Information Brochure. Essentially they involve
requirements for case summaries and publications.

Activity Log
There is no necessity to submit an activity log detailing week by week activities. Instead
the Programme Director must confirm that the prescribed training programme has been
carried out.

THIS REGULATION CAN APPLY TO ALL CANDIDATES.

Procedures Log
For Internal Medicine and Oncology, a separate procedures log is no longer required as
procedures are contained within the case log.

THIS REGULATION CAN APPLY TO ALL CANDIDATES.

Publications
At least two original companion animal internal medicine papers in a scientific journal are
required.

a) For Internal Medicine Residents the applicant must be the principal (first-named) author
of one of these papers.

b) For Cardiology Residents one (1) of these papers must be directly relevant to companion
animal medical cardiology and the applicant must be the principal author.

c) For Oncology Residents one (1) of these papers must be directly relevant to companion
animal medical oncology and the applicant must be the principal author.

In all cases the applicant does not necessarily need to be the principal author of the second
publication. This second publication may be a case report or review if the Applicant is
also the principal author.

THIS REGULATION CAN APPLY TO ALL CANDIDATES.

Case summaries
The total number of case reports has been decreased to three (3) and the word limit has
been increased to 2,000 words. All case reports must pass. One case summary is submitted
at the time of application for the General Examination and feedback will be given to all
candidates. If the case fails a new case summary must be submitted at the time of
application for the next examination. Two further case summaries are required at the
application for the Certifying Examination.

PLEASE NOTE THAT SINCE THIS NEW REGULATION INVOLVES SUBMISSION OF ONE CASE REPORT FOR EVALUATION AND FEEDBACK AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION FOR THE GENERAL EXAMINATION, IT IS NOT OPEN TO CANDIDATES WHO HAVE ALREADY PASSED THE GENERAL EXAMINATION OR WHO ARE SITTING THE GENERAL AND CERTIFYING EXAMINATION TOGETHER IN 2014. FOR THESE CANDIDATES THE PREVIOUS REGULATIONS FOR FIVE (5) CASE SUMMARIES APPLY AND A GUIDE FOR THESE CASE SUMMARIES IS AVAILABLE ON THIS WEBSITE.
